Advocacy Alert — Action Requested!!

This week the Senate Banking Committee is scheduled to take up legislation that will make important investments in permanent supportive housing and expansion of affordable rental housing targeted to extremely low-income households, including individuals living on SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance).

The “Johnson-Crapo” draft bill would provide $3.75 billion for the National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF) every year. The NHTF represents the largest investment in nearly 40 years for permanent supportive housing and new rental housing affordable to people living on SSI which can impact people living with serious mental illness. This is an investment the nation never made during the 1960s and 1970s when deinstitutionalization was first undertaken.

As Senators begin to consider amendments to the bill, they need to know that the NHTF should not be on the chopping block.  Urge Senators to stand by the draft bill’s commitment to the NHTF.
